Sosúa is located approximately in the middle of the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. It is where people came when they first visited the Dominican Republic at the birth of its life as a vacation destination in the 1980s. Many who visited remained! Sosúa is a vibrant and lively town with a beautiful bay. The beach is very much its main attraction.
Sosúa is comprised of a few neighborhoods: El Batey, Los Charamicos and Sosúa Abajo. El Batey is the center with many restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and shops. Sosúa wakes up as the rest of the country goes to sleep!
Los Charamicos is much poorer and consists of narrow streets with shabby houses, cafes, small shops and restaurants run by Dominicans, where for very little money you can enjoy a delicious traditional meal.
Playa Sosua is in the tranquil bay and is the main attraction of Sosúa. You will find a large number of shops selling swimsuits, souvenirs and other items, as well as restaurants and companies renting motorized water gear and diving equipment.
The climate of all holiday areas on the north coast is virtually the same. The best time for a beach vacation in Sosúa is still winter, from January to March with pleasant temperatures of between 25C and 27C, even with an average rainfall of 100 to 200mm per month! The higher summer temperatures can reach 31C, with average rainfall of 50 mm, and the ever-present trade winds temper the humidity. The rainy season in Sosúa is from October to early January, with most precipitation in December, often up to 300mm and tropical rainstorms are generally heavy but short-lived. As with the other areas, effects of a passing hurricane will be present from August to October.
A tip: do not worry too much about the weather forecasts showing icons of clouds and thunderstorms! The weather is very specific to the locality of the weather station and if it rains somewhere within the range of the station, a rain icon will be displayed. You will sometimes see thunderstorms predicted or recorded for every day of a two week period. It does NOT mean that it will rain every day for that fortnight. The weather is usually better at the coast anyway, which is where the hotels are.
