Shopping in the Dominican Republic
More than Rum and Cigars...
When you go shopping you will discover that the Dominican Republic has a lot more to offer than just cigars and rum. You will also find jewelry with amber, larimar and other precious and semi-precious stones, paintings, sculptures, statues, traditional faceless dolls, vanilla, coffee, chocolate as well as clothing, bags, calendars, picture books and decorative items for the home. It is a land of contrasts and you'll find both simple colmados (grocery stores) and modern shopping centers, bigger and nicer than many European cities.
Most shops open their doors at 9.00 (9 AM) and close at 19.00 (7 PM). Smaller stores will close a little earlier or those in tourist townsites may stay open until 22.00 (10 PM). You will find that the independently run shops may close for several hours in the middle of the day.
Santo Domingo and Santiago
Santo Domingo has the largest selection and most shopping malls, and specialty shops can be found in the streets near Winston Churchill and 27 de Febrero. Santiago has a large and diverse range of shops and in the Calle del Sol, situated in the bustling city center, you can go bargain hunting for a favorable price, which you'll no doubt find in grocery stores and many specialty shops.
Relax on a terrace or balcony while sipping a tropical cocktail or traditional Dominican meal. If you fancy a western snack, you'll easily find a McDonalds, Burger King or pizzeria.
Alcohol
The Dominican Republic has the best rum in the world. It is not only extremely tasty, it is also inexpensive, so be sure to pick up a few bottles to take home for drinking, cooking or gifts. The favourite rum cocktail is a Cuba Libre (rum and coke with lime), but it's also wonderful with fruit juices. "Mamajuana" is a medicinal drink from roots, herbs, honey and rum said to give energy to those who need it-particularly men. Until you develop a tolerance to it, you may find it has the opposite effect so take it easy to begin! You can do a tour of a rum factory as a highlight of your vacation, such as the factory of the Brugal family in Puerto Plata. Along with the guided tour, you will get some free samples and you can buy some of the best of the best rum. The national beer is Presidente, which is the standard 'cerveza' served in the bars and restaurants and hotels of the country.
Dominican Cigars
Do you enjoy a good cigar? Then you will taste testing those of the Dominican Republic since Dominican cigars are considered by experts as among the top of the world. In Santiago you can visit a number of cigar factories and buy directly from the crafters themselves. There are well-stocked tobacco shops in all of the major cities and some tourist resorts where many Dominican brands are sold. Note that many fake cigars are sold on the street. If you find yourself scoring a great deal, it may be that it's not the real thing. The largest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic is located in La Romana.
Souvenirs
Larimar, a beautiful light blue pectolite marbled with white, is only found in the Dominican Republic. It is made into jewelry and used in decorative arts of all kinds in the DR. You can visit one of the larimar museums in the country to learn everything about this extraordinary stone and you can buy some beautifully set pieces for excellent prices.
You can also find beautiful jewelry pieces incorporating amber. The amber is of a very high quality on the island and it is, therefore, possible to find a highly desirable piece containing small insects within. A visit to the Santo Domingo ambar museum is well worth it and a safe place to purchase pieces of amber. It is easily duplicated and fakes are sold as originals on the streets and beaches of the Dominican Republic. Blue amber and amber with insects are both extremely expensive. If it looks like you are getting a piece for too good a price, it may be a fake.
Dominican Arts and Crafts
In all tourist centers you will find shops and stalls selling Dominican and Haitian paintings and wood carvings. Look around to compare prices, artists' styles and themes, before considering a purchase. At that time, be sure to haggle on the price to arrive at a rate you feel is fair. It is expected that you will negotiate a price on these purchases so the initial price quoted will be very overinflated. You can expect to work your way down to a price of 1/3 to 1/2 of that quoted originally. While still hand crafted and beautiful, many of the paintings sold at the hotel and tourist shops are mass produced. Looking a little bit further into some of the vendor's kiosks may yield you one which is actually the artist himself selling his works.
Typical in the country are small ceramic or clay figures without faces. These women wear traditional clothing and the clay represents the rural life. They carry something like a pot of water on their heads, an armload of beans or carry a bunch of tropical flowers.
Price - Do Not Pay Too Much
To get the best selection and opportunity at a great deal, move away from the area of your hotel and see what's available. You may be surprised at the bargains and items that you find. When off the hotel property, take the opportunity to experience some of the real Dominican Republic, buying a meal of beans and rice, fried chicken or a selection of fresh fruits that you may not have seen at the hotel, like guayaba, varieties of mango, fresh coconut, passionfruit, and tropical orange varieties.
You can make use of a Dominican bank to withdraw money from your account using an ATM, or you can exchange money at an exchange bank (Casa de Cambio). There may be one at your hotel which won't have a good exchange rate, but will be very convenient. You can also cash traveler's cheques there, with a service charge levied. If you see somebody on the street offering to exchange your money, be suspicious of counterfeiting and use only a formal storefront.
