Pico Isabel de Torres offers a panoramic view of the Amber Coast from a point near the summit, 780 m (2558 ft) above sea level.
You reach the top by cable car, a climb of 10 minutes. There is a botanical garden and an image that resembles the statue of Christ
in Rio de Janeiro.
Fort San Felipe, the oldest fort in the New World, is another popular attraction.
You can see a collection of rare amber specimens and make some quality purchases at the Museo de Ambar Dominicano,
Calle Duarte 61, near Puerto Plata's Central Park.

A short distance from Puerto Plata is where you'll find the Damajagua Falls. This is a series of 27 waterfalls that allow visitors
to walk through and across the falls, jumping and sliding into the pools beneath. Wearing helmets and life jackets is mandatory,
but the tour should be avoided when the rivers are swollen from heavy rains.
Golfers can go to the Playa Dorada Golf Course,
an 18 hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones.
Ocean World was opened in 2007 with a live appearance by The Beach Boys before
a crowd of 3000 people. You can swim with the dolphins at the only park where they are maintained with respect in the country.

Along the north coast of the Dominican Republic is Puerto Plata. It has its own airport (POP) and most hotels are located within a half hour drive from the airport in the nearby tourist resorts of Playa Dorada, Luperon, Cofresi and Maimon.
East of Puerto Plata, the largest city on the north coast, lies the large village of Playa Dorada. More than a dozen top hotels line the beach and have everything to offer tourists to make a memorable vacation.
The fishing village of Maimon, twenty minutes from Puerto Plata, has a number of large luxury all-inclusive resorts. It is situated in a picturesque bay, surrounded by a fascinating landscape and right on a lovely sandy beach.
Cofresi is located 10 km west of Puerto Plata and has a beautiful golden palm beach, stunning scenery and a number of premier and luxury villas. Luperon is to the west in a beautifully natural hilly area a one hour drive from the city and is a typical small Dominican village on the bay with the same name. This location is perfect for a peaceful and relaxed holiday.
A "can't miss" is a visit to the city of Puerto Plata. You can see the beautiful colonial and Victorian homes, visit the Amber Museum, do a tasting in the rum factories and find much good food at one of the local restaurants.
The climate of all holiday areas on the north coast is virtually the same. The best time for a beach vacation in Puerto Plata is still winter, from January to March with pleasant temperatures of between 25C and 27C, even with an average rainfall of 100 to 200mm per month! The higher summer temperatures can reach 31C, with average rainfall of 50 mm, and the ever-present trade winds temper the humidity. The rainy season in Puerto Plata is from October to early January, with most precipitation in December, often up to 300mm and tropical rainstorms are generally heavy but short-lived. As with the other areas, effects of a passing hurricane will be present from August to October.
A tip: do not worry too much about the weather forecasts showing icons of clouds and thunderstorms! The weather is very specific to the locality of the weather station and if it rains somewhere within the range of the station, a rain icon will be displayed. You will sometimes see thunderstorms predicted or recorded for every day of a two week period. It does NOT mean that it will rain every day for that fortnight. The weather is usually better at the coast anyway, which is where the hotels are.
